Cinematography inspiration

I am interested in including shots that are recreations/paying ho,age to iconic shots in film embedded into the mise-en-scene

I think the use of intertextuality would appeal to different audiences - for enjoyment and can also bring a sense of nostalgia to the video

the films used would also serve as context for the video and can add different perspectives when hearing an understanding the song in relation to the music video

In mostly all the shots i have looked at, the characters are positioned directly in the centre of the shot - this establishes them as the important part of the scene - they are the main character. The mise-en-scene surrounding them then allows for the audience to understand the character - the joker is messy and dirty shown through the streets yet almost heavenly and joyful through the contrasting clear blue sky, Joel in risky business is relaxed and comfortable in his clothes and his home

RISKY BUSINESS

  • I would like to translate the joy in this scene and simplicity of he shot in my video
  • It is an iconic shot that many know serving as intertextuality to translate emotion
  • it would be an interesting way to introduce the focus on the mina character of the music video
  • It may also establish the character if the video and therefore the band as one that is culturally aware and enjoys pop culture and nostalgia

JOKER
  • I like how the blue sky contrasts the dark walls - in my case, I would have a blue sky with bright walls and the sun trickling through trees - joy and calmness
  • He is in the centre of the shot - the world, in this moment is centring round him
  • The freedom the character is felling in this moment can translate
SAY ANYTHING
  • Another iconic shot in film - much like risky business the shot would serve as intertextuality cementing the band as culturally aware
  • It could link to a main story line of the main character on their way to see their partner
  • There could be a modern take on the action - a phone and speakers instead of a boombox
  • the lead and their partner could finish in the video walking off sharing headphones
PULP FICTION
  • I find this an extremely interesting camera angle and one that can be instantly recognisable
  • I would be interested in having someone open up their boot mouthing the words to the song, head bopping before closing the boot again to take you o the next character scene

BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY
I would like the lead character to be being followed down the street, dancing and singing, enjoying themselves
This could be a reference to music videos by the verve, massive attack and the beegees

BIG FISH
  • This still is an example of how i would like to use fields and flowers to convey joy and freedom through the connotations of nature
  • I like how densely packed the flowers are making the character stand out in comparison

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL
  • The lights surrounding the character (again, positioned directly in the centre) work to establish the character as the light of the opposite character world
  • As the lights move, and she moves round the carousel, the lights light up her face in a range of colours - i am inspired by the static character placement contrasting the moving light on her face
    • for example, the band could have shots of the band lit up like this - spotlight moments
BIRDMAN
  • Similarly to the shot above i like the use of colour.
  • It's captivating how the main character is a silhouette completely contrasting the lights of the shop
  • Beauty combined with meaning is an aspect i would like to carry forward into my work
LOST IN TRANSLATION

  • The film is about the intimacy of human connection - these shots detail it perfectly
  • I like the intimacy of all the shots - the above two are still, in a mid shot, adding to the powerful simplicity
  • I was interested in the shot below showing the character feeling alone - she is by herself and the close up shot contrasts the high shot of the city all in one scene

SHE'S A RAINBOW
  • This clip comes from the new lyric video for The Rolling Stones - like a rainbow
  • I am inspired by the huge array of colours throughout the video and again how the woman in centred in the shot with rings round her like a halo

FERRIS BEULER'S DAY OFF
  • Arguably one of the most iconic sequences in film and one that has impacted me most
  • I like the childlike innocence and playfulness although the film is really about growing up
  • I am interested in recreating some of the still shots
  • The setting of a gallery could also be interesting as part of the mise-en-scene - detailing everyday beauty by having shots of people in front of art, looking at it, it further reinforces this idea of beauty
  • Including shots like these would not only fit in the mise-en-scene of the music video but would also pay homage to the film and there could be value transference through the intertextuality

THIS LIFE - VAMPIRE WEEKEND
  • As stated in my analysis of the music video, This Life, I am looking to include such close up shots of people smiling and acts of happiness and friendship like people hugging to keep the theme of everyday beauty and joy fitting the brief of a song inspiring elation
